Quilting Therapy Programs

Quilting for Therapy

The Benefits

Quilting, as a form of art therapy, is a creative process that can help improve and enhance physical, mental and emotional well-being. The kinesthetic process of quilting can be cathartic, healing, soothing and relaxing—all while producing a tactile piece of art that celebrates the life experiences (including challenges) of the participant.

Quilting for Art Therapy

A way of dealing with stress, loss, anger, grief that re-imagines the participant’s world view and ends in celebration and the creation of a tactile work of art.

Quilting for Chronic Diseases

Promotes and maintains joint flexibility through low stress movement of the fingers elbows and shoulders and reinforces neurological pathways through reading and repetitive sewing processes.

Quilting for Cognitive Therapy

Reinforces reading, math and logic skills while tapping into the artistic side of the brain which translates to maintenance or re-building of  maximum independence and growth at any age.

Quilting for Health and Wellness

Creative process which crosses generational barriers blending new and old skills. Quilting reinforces community while producing practical or ornamental tactile art through celebration of how each participant sees the world.
Mindful Quilting Therapy Program

About the Program

Mindful Quilting is a therapeutic intervention program that fosters fine motor skills and help to reintroduce learning skills, improve cognition and enhance memory function. Using repetitive tasks and by learning new techniques, participants work through a step by step process to produce a tactile piece of art that can be used every day.

This program uses pattern selection, color work, sewing and the technique of paper piecing to help reinforce fine and gross motor skills, spatial relationships, math skills, and reading comprehension reinforced by visual demonstration and pictures to create a beautifully-crafted quilt. Sewing machines and other adaptive tools will be provided. Work stations will be set up throughout the session to promote movement. The repetitive process and motion of quilting is likened to a form of meditation ending in a sense of accomplishment.
